How could people "write" using knots, textures and colors in Andean cultures before the Conquest? Why call this writing? How does it compare to the earliest forms of writing usually discussed in the western tradition?

Katie,   I find this fascinating.  Apparently knots have been used for communication by many people, but not like the Inca.

will miss teas and brunches for a couple of weeks

Hi Folks! I just wanted to let you know I will be missing teas and brunches until after the 20th of December -- I'm off to Sweden one week to co-lead a graduate workshop in feminist methodology and the next week to do a seminar with faculty, post-docs and anyone else on transdisciplinary practices and my stuff on TV and the web and reenactments (you know some of this). If I can convince folks to check out SL I may be on and off to show it around. But then again, maybe not! But I will see you… Continue

Missed Tea to see Second Skin documentary

Well I missed the weekly Tea tonight to go see the documentary Second Skin -- which I thought was going to have material on Second Life. Very little. Although billed as being about virtual worlds, it was really about folks caught up in gaming, mostly in World of Warcraft and Everquest. Because the filmmakers -- who where there at AFI, and local folks who grew up in Silver Spring MD -- wanted to focus on "good stories" they tended to concentrate on online romance and addiction. I don't want to… Continue

Political economy? epistemology? Hoping to have good responses to IV, Arawn & Imper's questions....

The most straightforward ways of thinking about political economy and epistemology I know come from feminist theory and cybernetics, two legacies that I, perhaps too often, take for granted. Feminist often think of political economy as flows of money and power. See Nancy Hartsock's book Money, Sex and Power for one approach along those lines, emerging from an engagement with Marxism. And as many of you know, the cybernetic work of Gregory Bateson is also fundamental to many ways I tend to look… Continue

impact and other metrics

I only just saw Aldo's link now: Arg! I don't know how you felt about it Aldo but this is exactly the kind of thing I was trying to whistle in the dark make fun of since I know this is actually quite serious and quite terrorizing.

In fact I was just noticing that Australia had changed their metrics for assessment of faculty impact and production (production metrics were earlier) when the Howard government lost and the Rudd government came in: they went from Research Quality Framework… Continue
